During 1991-1997, the design research community consolidated structured, stage-based workflows and formal methodologies, with strong emphasis on problem framing, requirements-to-configuration traceability, and the balancing of functional and nonfunctional goals. Researchers increasingly integrated rigorous design processes with systematic requirements engineering and nonfunctional considerations, and began to incorporate viewpoint-driven strategies to handle complexity. This cross-cutting approach unified practical design practice with theoretical underpinnings, foreshadowing later multi-view and model-based design trends.
